China's optical communication industry still faces bottlenecks, and the status of core components is

my country has the world's largest optical communication market, but can only create some companies competing in the low-end market; it has the most complete optical communication industry chain, but the core optical components are still imported. A large optical communication country is not a strong optical communication country, which is worrying.
"Heroic states are surrounded by mist, and outstanding talents are like stars. The tower is at the junction of Yi and Xia, and the guests and hosts enjoy the beauty of the southeast." Using this passage from "Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng" to describe the optical communication companies during the communication exhibition can be said to be timely and appropriate. Thanks to the great development of China's communication industry, most optical communication companies have already grown to a considerable scale and have great influence at home and abroad. Coincidentally, the communication exhibition was also held in September, the same time as Wang Bo wrote the preface, and these optical communication companies were basically from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shenzhen.
  A grand occasion
At this communication exhibition, the representative companies of my country's optical fiber and cable manufacturing are FiberHome Technology, Hengtong Group, Junzhi Group, and Zhongli Group. These companies have accumulated many years of experience in the communication industry, and the products they display have covered the entire communication industry's demand for cables: from telecommunications to radio and television, to aerospace, ocean, energy, etc., all places where cables are needed can be covered.
It is worth mentioning that Hengtong Group exhibited its optical fiber preform with completely independent intellectual property rights, which has left a Chinese imprint on the optical fiber preform and can be regarded as a model of technological research and development of national enterprises. The only drawback is that the current production capacity can only be self-sufficient, and there has been no direct change to the situation that 60% of the optical fiber preforms in my country are still imported, but I believe it is only a matter of time.
In addition, all optical fiber and cable companies at this communication exhibition displayed their overall ODN solutions without exception. At the beginning of this year, China Telecom released the "Optical Network City" strategy and China Unicom also launched the FTTH project. This has caused a lot of ripples. All companies in the industry have quickly transformed. Those that can produce ODN passive components are expanding their capacity; those that cannot produce have joined in through mergers and acquisitions, factory construction, etc. Domestic companies have found that the market's response is amazing.
However, such a rapid expansion of production also fully illustrates a problem: the threshold of my country's ODN market is too low, the products produced do not have much technical content, and the market is easily saturated. Most manufacturers can only rely on frequent price wars to ensure market share.
my country has the world's largest optical communication market, but can only create some companies competing in the low-end market; my country has the most complete optical communication industry chain, but the core optical components are still imported. It is worrying that a country with a large optical communication industry is not a strong optical communication country.
Compose melancholy
Every time I read the Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng, I am amazed by Wang Bo’s literary talent and can always appreciate the helplessness he expressed in the text. After watching the grand occasion of optical communication, it is not difficult to analyze the hidden worries of domestic national enterprises: if there is no such huge market in my country, how many of these enterprises will be left?
There is also a foreign company, Corning, among the optical fiber and cable enterprises participating in this exhibition. Everyone who knows optical fiber knows Corning, but how many people who know optical fiber have noticed the gap between domestic enterprises and Corning? In this exhibition, Corning's booth scale, exhibitors, and product types are somewhat inconsistent with its background as a multinational enterprise. But every exhibition of Corning makes people marvel at its more than 40 years of experience in the field of optical fiber and its absolutely leading technological innovation capabilities.
The optical fiber with a loss of less than 0.18dB/km, used for ultra-long-distance high-speed transmission; the optical fiber that traverses the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an average altitude of more than 5,000 meters, works in a low-temperature environment below minus 20℃, and guarantees the communication engineering of the State Grid. These are all manifestations of Corning's world-leading technology. In terms of details, how many companies care about the short jumper on the data center cabinet? And it is based on this jumper that the "Easy Environment" solution proposed by Corning can bring in $1 billion in revenue every year.
An engineer from a domestic manufacturer once said: "Every time we purchase some components, we always hope to use as many domestic products as possible, but many times we give up during the technical evaluation: for the same component, domestic products have different specifications and colors, so how can we use them?"
As Mao Qian of Wuhan Academy of Posts and Telecommunications said: "A strong communications country cannot be built entirely by importing. While importing, we must digest, absorb and innovate, and establish, improve and develop our own and national communications industry to support the establishment of a strong communications country."
